Are you Doing Green Smoothies yet? No? Tomorrow You Start.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

There’s one thing I want from my mornings.

I’m an entrepreneur, and as someone that’s made the leap from getting paid hourly to getting paid on results, I seriously can’t afford to spend too many days feeling all foggy and tired.

I need to be clear, I need to be focused, and ideally I’d like to make sure I really don’t ever get sick. I’m here to create! As a fellow adventurer in life (whatever you’re doing with it) I know you care about the exact same things.

Whether you’re tired of being tired, or sick of buying big clothes, here’s the next big morning habit to add to the list. I’ll have to do an adventure on this one a little later, but for now I’ll get you all going with my little routine.

Exhibit A: Your current breakfast.

I used to do a lot of granola. You know the stuff, it’s in the bulk bins at Fred Meyer’s and goes good with soy milk.

I definitely don’t have time here to go into the negatives of soy and grains, but if you’re sick of having low energy and foggy thinking there’s good reason to try other breakfasts.

Some of you might even feel like the granola would be a step up. Even if you don’t do bacon and eggs every day, there’s still the coffee conundrum. As a Seattle native, I don’t have to tell you how big a deal coffee is to the people I live around. EVERYONE drinks coffee.

Feeling guilty yet? This is a good chance to let it go. I’m not here to tell you you need to give up any of your daily rituals, and I’m not here to tell you about your ‘bad’ habits. Nothing is bad or good. You just need to be mindful of how your habits are affecting you, and be open to exploring other things if you’re sick of paying the price.

I’m also not going to get into the science here. there are all kinds of great people who can do that better than me. I’m not going to try and convince you of how chlorophyll and greens are some of the best things you can eat for energy and weight loss. I’m not going to go into detail on why starting the day with an alkalizing, hydrating meal instead of an acidic one can potentially mean you will never get sick again.

Here’s what I’ll do instead. I’ll give you a simple new habit to try.

Try it for one week. Heck, try it for three days. If you don’t immediately starting feeling better, more proud of yourself, and more inspired than ever to hit the goals you’ve set for yourself, then feel free to dip back into the ham and french toast. It’s always there for you, and you don’t need to feel like you’re depriving yourself. But you’ve got hundreds of days in a year, let’s take a few and try this crazy new breakfast out. I dare you!

If you need a recipe to start with, I went into all the green smoothie recipe details you could ever need yesterday.

Or at least all the details you’ll get out of a non-chef like me: ).

But James! What about the blender?

I’m a big fan of making sure there’s a low barrier of entry. If you’re not already equipped, then don’t let the cost stop you.

You don’t need to start with a Vitamix. I still don’t have one.

  • Magic Bullet’s are brilliant when it comes to fast and easy. ($50~$100)
  • You can usually pick up some generic brand starter blender at Fred Meyer’s for $35
  • There are ALWAYS blenders at Good Will for maybe $10 (keep an eye out for a Jack Lalanne juicer while you’re there!)
  • If you’re seriously strapped, you can even check Craig’s list, or borrow one from a friend.

Motion leads to motion. The first day you might miss the muffin. After a week it won’t be a big deal. After three weeks, you won’t even be able to imagine going back. You don’t ‘have’ to do anything, and you can certainly click off this page and wait another six months before giving this a whirl (so to speak). That said, if you do try this out tomorrow, you’ll sure be glad you did.

Nothing tastes as good as being healthy feels:).

So what smoothie are you going to try making tomorrow? Leave your questions and comments in the box below.

Namaste my friends,
James

    James,

What is your thought on drinks like Odwalla Superfood? I like to have a glass of that in the morning.

  • Anonymous

Ah, interesting story actually. First off, I believe in ‘good’ and ‘better’. Odwalla is better than coffee and french toast of course, so you don’t need to feel too guilty about it.

That said, there was a big e-coli scare with the Odwalla drinks a few years back, and ever since then the FDA has required all store-bought drinks to be flash pasteurized.

When you heat things over 115 degrees, it destroys all the phytonutrients, it kills over three quarters of the digestive enzymes, and it can significantly reduce the protein and digestibility of the food. At least, this is what I’ve been reading from people like David Wolfe and Gabriel Cousins: ). Odwalla might be better than that florida orange juice, but it’s still not going to be half as good as a good shot of fresh chlorophyll first thing in the morning.

One other word of warning. When you’re doing smoothies, you’re leaving all the fiber in. You won’t be overloading on fruit, just because you can’t drink THAT much. A few strawberries and a banana isn’t going to pack on the pounds.

Fruit juice though? That green odwalla stuff is DENSE. If you’re interested in making healthy diet changes that will lead to weight loss, I’d highly recommend switching off ALL sugary store bought drinks, odwalla included. I lost 20 pounds when I dropped store bought fruit juices. Crazy, right?

Good point, as I definitely view the Odwalla as ‘better’ than my previous morning routine. I was unaware of the flash pasteurization and what it does to the food. I might look into a magic bullet or something now – it can’t be that hard to make your own smoothies. I will say that I only have 6-8 ounces in the morning, and I’m tracking all of my calories, so I’m not binging on it. Thanks James!

    Hi James,

Is Vitamix, Magic Bullet , etc .. a Juicer or a blender? I’ve been looking for a really good juicer and after reading your recipes, I;m wondering if the smoothies are the same as juicing?

    Thank you for your advice…

    Disa :-)

all the things I mentioned are blenders. I personally prefer blenders, because you leave all the fiber in place. It’s really easy to drink five apples, but you’d be really hard pressed to finish off that much goop from a smoothie. If you’re leaning towards a raw diet though, it’s unlikely you’ll need the extra fiber… but if you’re still doing a standard american diet, a green smoothie is still the best way to start the day in my humble opinion.

If you do want to start juicing however, I recommend keeping an eye out for an old champion juicer on craig’s list. Anything made before 2002 or so is rock solid (their manufacturing quality went down in the last few years for some reason). My dad still has his, and he got it before I was born. That thing’s a beast, it’s pretty easy to clean, and as an added bonus it’ll even make nut butters!

I also found a Jack Lallanne juicer at good will for $35 one time. Hardly used! The kind with the spinny sharp spike funnel that the veggies get pressed onto isn’t quite as good as the champion, but for the price you really can’t beat a jack lallanne juicer. It’s super easy to use, and easy to clean up… you can’t go wrong with that one either.

If you’re looking to juice greens though, you’ll need a different kind of juicer entirely, and they can run up to $250. I don’t recommend starting out that way, just get your kale into your diet with a blender. That’s what I do. I’ll go ahead and whip up a post on this one for next week, so let me know if you have any more questions you want addressed: ).
